Medicare Part B can cover a nebulizer as durable medical equipment when the prescribed use and equipment meet the applicable coverage rules. It is not a blanket benefit for any machine sold online, and a respiratory diagnosis alone does not establish payment.

The equipment and its prescribed use are connected
The current Medicare equipment policy evaluates whether the nebulizer, compressor and related supplies are reasonable and necessary for the prescribed use. Different equipment types have different criteria. Approval of a retail product is not the same as a Medicare coverage decision.
Ask the ordering clinician and supplier to identify the actual equipment and the policy they are using. The supplier should check the required clinical records and order before delivery. This guide does not recommend or name any treatment product.
What to verify before accepting delivery
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Clinical order | The equipment must be prescribed for a qualifying medical need. |
| Supplier enrollment | Medicare equipment claims require an enrolled supplier. |
| Assignment | Confirm whether the supplier accepts the approved payment amount. |
| Rental or purchase | Do not assume you can choose either arrangement for every item. |
| Accessories and replacement | Ask which items are included and which have separate rules. |
Understand your share of the cost
For covered DME under Original Medicare, you generally pay 20% of the approved amount after the Part B deductible when the supplier accepts assignment. Optional upgrades and noncovered items can leave additional costs. A Medicare Advantage plan can use contracted suppliers and its own authorization process.
Get a written explanation if the supplier expects Medicare to deny the item. A signed notice should explain the particular concern, not simply promise that all costs will be reimbursed later. Keep the order, delivery documents and claim response for any follow-up or appeal.
