Start with your oral health needs
Dry mouth, decay, gum disease, broken teeth and ill-fitting dentures can affect everyday comfort. Discuss your medications, oral-care routine and any symptoms with your dentist. Ask for a written treatment plan if you may need several procedures.
Coverage can vary for exams, cleanings, extractions, root canals, periodontal care, oral surgery, crowns, bridges, dentures and implants. A service being listed in an advertisement does not establish that it is covered for your situation.
How Medicare fits in
Original Medicare generally excludes routine dental care. Limited dental services can be covered when directly connected to qualifying medical treatment; being treated in a hospital does not automatically make all dental services covered.
Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits with limitations. Medigap may pay cost sharing for Medicare-covered care but does not create a separate routine dental benefit.

Compare types of dental coverage
| Type | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| DHMO | Do I need a network primary dentist? What copay applies to each procedure and specialist? |
| DPPO | How much less will I pay in network? What deductible, coinsurance and annual plan maximum apply? |
| Indemnity | What allowed amount will the plan reimburse? Could the dentist bill me for the difference? |
| Discount program | What fee do I pay for membership and each service? This is not insurance and does not pay claims. |
| Medicare Advantage benefit | Is the dental network separate? Is the allowance shared across preventive and major services? |
Before dentures, implants or major treatment
- Check waiting periods, missing-tooth exclusions and replacement frequency.
- Ask whether implant surgery, the abutment and the crown are covered separately.
- Confirm whether the annual maximum is a plan payment limit; you may owe costs above it.
- Ask your insurer for a pre-treatment estimate and understand that final payment depends on the claim.
- If you have Medicaid or VA benefits, ask those programs about your individual eligibility.
