Find the right application path for Medicare, Medicaid and premium assistance. Prepare documents and confirm each program’s coverage start date.

Medicare and Medicaid have different application processes. You may qualify for one or both, but submitting a health-plan quote form does not enroll you in either program. Begin with the official agency responsible for the benefit you need.

Applying for Medicare

First check whether enrollment is automatic because you already receive qualifying benefits. Otherwise, use Social Security's Medicare application service or contact its office. Verify the enrollment period that applies to you; the annual fall plan election period is not a general substitute for Part A or Part B enrollment.

Have identity and residence information, benefit records and any requested employment-coverage evidence available. If delaying Part B, confirm that your particular coverage supports that decision.

Applying for Medicaid or premium assistance

Use your state's official application channel. Requirements depend on state, income, resources where applicable and eligibility category. A person may qualify for Medicare premium help even when not eligible for full Medicaid benefits, so ask about both.

Submit requested verification through a secure official channel and retain the submission receipt. Respond promptly if the agency needs more information.

After submitting

  1. Check each application separately.
  2. Read the written approval or denial.
  3. Confirm effective dates and any premiums you still owe.
  4. Follow the notice's appeal instructions if information is wrong.
  5. Give providers your updated insurance details.

Do not cancel existing coverage until you understand the transition. Approval of one program does not establish the start date of another.
