Medigap Plan G: Benefits and Costs to Check

Learn the key cost difference in Medigap Plan G and how to compare standard and high-deductible quotes.

Explore this page

Medigap Plan G helps pay specified costs left by Original Medicare, but it does not cover the Part B deductible. You pay a separate Medigap premium as well as your applicable Medicare premiums. The policy is not a promise that every health expense will be paid.

Check the exact version

Some states offer a high-deductible Plan G. Its lower premium, if offered, comes with a different payment arrangement: you must meet that version's annual deductible before it pays eligible benefits. Do not compare it with standard Plan G as if the cost sharing were identical.

Questions for a written quote

  • Is this standard Plan G or high-deductible Plan G?
  • What is the approved monthly premium for my age and location?
  • How is the premium rated, and what discounts have conditions?
  • Which expenses remain my responsibility?
  • Does this application require health underwriting?

Compare more than this month's price

Use two columns: predictable premiums and possible costs when you receive care. Add the Part B deductible to the appropriate scenario, and account for services outside Medicare and Medigap coverage. Ask the insurer to explain unclear exclusions rather than assuming the policy covers them.

Review enrollment rights before switching from another policy or from Medicare Advantage. Keep current coverage until the replacement has been approved and the dates have been coordinated.
