A Medicare coverage gap can mean either a cost you owe for covered care or a service the benefit does not cover. Those are different problems. A policy that helps with coinsurance does not automatically pay for excluded services.

Identify the type of gap
| Concern | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Original Medicare deductibles or coinsurance | Medigap, employer coverage or qualifying assistance. |
| Routine dental, vision or hearing services | Any separate policy or specific Medicare Advantage benefit. |
| Long-term help with daily activities | Long-term care resources and state Medicaid eligibility. |
| Large medical expenses | Supplemental payments or the plan's medical spending limit. |
Medigap does not create a new medical benefit
It helps pay certain Original Medicare costs according to its standardized benefits. It generally does not cover routine dental care, hearing aids or long-term custodial care. It also does not pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing.
Medicare Advantage extras have limits
A plan may include additional services, but the benefit can have provider, frequency, amount or eligibility limits. An allowance is not unrestricted cash. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits, not a supplement added on top of Original Medicare.
Ask about financial assistance separately
Medicare Savings Programs may help with premiums and, for qualifying categories, covered medical cost sharing. Full Medicaid benefits and eligibility vary by state. Approval for one form of assistance does not establish every benefit available under another program.
Build a short action list
- Name the service and the amount you are trying to cover.
- Determine whether Medicare considers the service covered.
- Check your existing insurance before buying another policy.
- Ask about waiting periods, enrollment rights and total premiums.
Request written terms. No single product closes every possible gap, and a lower advertised premium is not a complete comparison.
