What Aging Partners can help explain

The city's program describes counseling for people age 60 and older, including Medicare, supplements, Medicare Advantage and public benefits. Its financial counselors are certified SHIP counselors. Call 402-441-7070 to discuss eligibility and arrange a visit; appointments are encouraged.

The program's counseling is not estate planning or investment advice. Ask which service fits your question rather than assuming every financial or legal need is included in a Medicare appointment.

Prepare your Medicare timeline

Enrollment in federal Medicare is different from choosing a private plan. Check whether Parts A and B will start automatically or whether you must apply through Social Security. If you are still working, obtain information about the employer plan before delaying Part B.

Bring or identify Question it answers
Medicare card or application notice Which benefits are active and when?
Employment and insurance dates Is a special enrollment opportunity available?
Current policy documents How does existing coverage coordinate?
Doctors and expected care Which network and budget questions matter?

Compare before signing

Original Medicare, Medigap and Medicare Advantage use different arrangements. A supplement does not pay Medicare Advantage copays. Confirm the exact plan's network, premium and likely service costs instead of choosing only from an advertised extra benefit.

Keep a clear record

  • Write down the enrollment deadline that applies to you.
  • Keep submitted forms and requested documentation.
  • Confirm the new coverage start date.
  • Ask before cancelling employer or retiree benefits.

A counseling discussion does not itself enroll you or guarantee eligibility. Complete the required official application and keep its confirmation. If you need private-plan sales assistance, verify the agent's license and understand which insurers the agent represents.
