Wisconsin Medicare Supplement: Basic Benefits, Riders and Buying Rights

Compare Wisconsin’s Medigap structure, optional riders, enrollment protections and official insurer resources before choosing a policy.

Explore this page

Wisconsin Medicare Supplement insurance uses a state-specific structure instead of the standard letter chart used in most states. Begin with the Wisconsin basic policy and available riders. A national recommendation to buy a particular letter is not a complete description of a Wisconsin policy.

Compare the actual benefit design

Component What to examine
Basic benefits Required Wisconsin coverage and Medicare cost sharing.
Optional riders Additional benefits and their separate prices.
Cost-sharing version Expenses you retain under that version.
Medicare SELECT Network conditions for full supplemental benefits.

Wisconsin's required benefits include specified protections beyond the usual national Medigap comparison. Read the state's guide and the insurer's outline for limits and conditions. An additional home-health or skilled-nursing benefit is not unlimited long-term custodial-care insurance.

Check your enrollment protection

Wisconsin requires Medicare Supplement and SELECT insurers to make coverage available during a six-month period beginning with Part B enrollment, regardless of age. A person enrolled before 65 because of disability or ESRD also receives another opportunity at 65. Ask how any permitted preexisting-condition waiting period and prior coverage apply.

Outside open enrollment, a qualifying loss or change of coverage may create guaranteed-issue rights. Preserve the notice and confirm the application deadline before canceling anything.

Shop using state resources

  • Compare the same basic benefits and riders.
  • Get a written quote for your residence and effective date.
  • Check the legal insurer and seller's licensing.
  • Review renewal terms and potential premium changes.
  • Confirm acceptance before replacing an existing policy.

The Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance publishes a consumer guide and policy information. The state's Medigap Helpline provides independent assistance. A Licensed Insurance Agent can explain available policies, but no private seller is an official Medicare representative.
