Original Medicare generally does not pay for personal emergency response systems such as medical-alert pendants or Life Alert. Describing a device as a safety product or getting a clinician's recommendation does not automatically make it covered durable medical equipment.

Check for a specific plan benefit
Some Medicare Advantage plans may include a personal emergency response benefit. Availability depends on the exact plan, year and eligibility conditions. Ask member services to identify the benefit in your Evidence of Coverage and explain how to order through the approved supplier.
A member discount is different from insurance coverage. For example, a vendor may offer reduced pricing while stating that the service is not part of the insurer's Medicare contract. Do not interpret a familiar insurance logo as approval for reimbursement.
Compare the full commitment
| Question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Initial expense | Equipment, activation and shipping charges. |
| Ongoing expense | Monthly monitoring and optional features. |
| Coverage | Approved supplier and eligibility requirements. |
| Ending service | Cancellation, return and refund conditions. |
Before ordering
- Get the plan's confirmation before paying a vendor.
- Ask whether the device must be ordered through the plan.
- Check home or mobile service availability at your location.
- Request written terms for monitoring and optional features.
- Keep the order and any authorization confirmation.
Other assistance may be available
Some state Medicaid home- and community-based programs may provide personal emergency response services when their requirements are met. That is a separate eligibility process, not an automatic Medicare entitlement.
Compare overall medical benefits and costs before changing a Medicare plan for one extra. An alert-system benefit does not replace emergency medical care or establish that every associated ambulance or hospital expense will have no cost.
