Moving from Marketplace Coverage to Medicare: Dates, Costs and Next Steps

Coordinate Marketplace and Medicare start dates, check premium tax credits and protect family members who still need Marketplace insurance.

Marketplace insurance and Medicare use different enrollment systems. If you have an individual Marketplace plan and become eligible for Medicare, coordinate the change before coverage starts. Marketplace insurance does not generally protect you from Medicare late-enrollment consequences the way qualifying current-employment group coverage can.

Make a transition checklist

  1. Confirm your Medicare eligibility and the separate start dates for A and B.
  2. Check whether you will be enrolled automatically or must apply.
  3. Choose any additional Medicare coverage and verify its approved start date.
  4. Report the change to the Marketplace and arrange the correct end date for your own coverage.
  5. Keep coverage for household members who still need it and update their Marketplace application.

Do not end coverage merely because an application was submitted. Match confirmed dates to avoid a gap or unnecessary overlap. Marketplace coverage does not automatically become Medicare.

Financial help can change

Once you are eligible for premium-free Part A, or have enrolled in Part A that requires a premium, Marketplace financial assistance generally stops being available to you. Continuing to receive assistance when ineligible can create repayment at tax filing. Report the change and ask the Marketplace about your circumstances.

Situation What to verify
Eligible for Part A without a premium Medicare enrollment timing and when Marketplace assistance ends.
Must pay a Part A premium You may be able to choose Marketplace instead, but review Medicare waiting periods and possible penalties.
Other family members remain on Marketplace Their coverage and recalculated financial assistance.
Eligibility due to End-Stage Renal Disease Review the specific Medicare and Marketplace choices before enrolling.

Marketplace is not Medigap

Someone who knows you have Medicare generally cannot sell you an individual Marketplace plan as additional coverage. Medigap is a separate product designed to supplement Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive Medicare benefits, not Marketplace insurance.

Get the right help

Use Medicare or Social Security for Medicare enrollment questions and HealthCare.gov or your state Marketplace for cancellation and household updates. If tax credits or retroactive coverage are involved, check the dates with the responsible agencies and a qualified tax professional. Keep written confirmations rather than relying on a verbal promise.
