Cigna Medicare Surround: Understand Your Retiree Coverage and Claims

Identify the actual Medicare Surround retiree contract, Medicare-first billing and sponsor rules before assuming standard Medigap benefits.

Explore this page

Cigna Healthcare describes Medicare Surround as a retiree medical indemnity plan that supplements Medicare. Do not assume every Surround arrangement is a standard retail Medigap policy or a Medicare Advantage plan. Your employer or plan sponsor's contract establishes the actual benefits.

How claims generally flow

Cigna's description says Medicare is billed first, with eligible claims normally forwarded for secondary consideration. When Medicare does not cover a service, payment depends on whether the specific Surround contract covers it. The billing address on the card may be needed for a separate submission.

Ask the sponsor for these documents

Document or detail Why it matters
Current benefit booklet Defines covered expenses, limits and exclusions.
Eligibility and contribution notice Explains retiree participation and your payment.
Coordination rules Identifies required Medicare enrollment and payment order.
Separate coverage details Clarifies which benefits come from another contract.

Prepare a claim question

Keep the Medicare notice, provider's itemized bill and any secondary payment explanation together. Ask whether a balance reflects a deductible, excluded expense, missing information or a claim that has not yet reached the secondary payer. Avoid sending duplicate submissions without first checking status.

Use the member-service number on your own card. A website intended for health care professionals is not necessarily the correct consumer account.

Before replacing retiree coverage

Contact the employer or sponsor before canceling or joining an individual Medicare plan. A change can affect access to retiree benefits and, depending on the arrangement, benefits for family members. Returning later may not be available.

Compare the actual contract rather than assuming a familiar supplement letter or Medicare Advantage benefit chart applies. Obtain the sponsor's written explanation and confirm any new coverage before ending the existing arrangement.
