ROMTech PortableConnect and Medicare: check the device and rental rules

PortableConnect is a home rehabilitation device. Verify the billed equipment category, Medicare requirements, rental period and any personal costs.

ROMTech's PortableConnect is a home rehabilitation system with remotely supervised movement sessions. It is not a robot implanted inside the body. Whether Medicare pays depends on the exact equipment and services billed, the qualifying condition and applicable coverage rules.

Do not confuse a supplier's program with Medicare limits

ROMTech describes insurance verification before delivery and rental periods based on the prescribed program. Those arrangements do not establish that every day of use or every surgery is covered by Medicare.

For example, Medicare's national rule for continuous passive motion devices covers qualifying home use after total knee replacement when use begins within two days of surgery. Coverage is limited to the portion of the three-week period after surgery during which the device is used at home. Ask the supplier whether that category applies to the item being billed; do not automatically apply it to every PortableConnect service or assume a longer rental is covered.

Before accepting delivery

Item to verify Reason
Equipment name and billing code Identifies the actual benefit under review.
Order and surgical date Timing and documentation can affect eligibility.
Covered rental dates The prescribed period may exceed payable days.
Supplier and plan network Medicare enrollment or plan participation matters.
Pickup and extensions Prevent unintended private-pay rental charges.

Physical therapy is a separate benefit

A covered therapist visit does not automatically pay for a particular home device. Likewise, equipment coverage does not mean all remote visits or monitoring charges are included. Request an itemized estimate that distinguishes these services.

Ask what deductible, coinsurance and noncovered charges could apply, and obtain extension terms before keeping the equipment longer. A manufacturer statement about insurance is not a personal payment guarantee. Your clinician should decide whether the device fits your rehabilitation needs; this article explains the coverage questions.
