Michigan does not provide one comprehensive Medicare dental policy to everyone enrolled in Part A or Part B. Medicare, Michigan Medicaid and private dental benefits are separate forms of coverage with different eligibility and payment rules.

Medicare and Medicaid have different roles
Original Medicare generally excludes routine cleanings, fillings, dentures and extractions, apart from limited dental services closely connected to covered medical treatment. Medicare Advantage may offer additional dental benefits, but the exact benefit belongs to the plan.
Michigan expanded adult Medicaid dental benefits in 2023. That change concerns Medicaid eligibility and covered dental services; it did not add universal routine dental coverage to Medicare. People with both programs should verify which administrator handles their dental claims.
Use the correct card and network
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full benefit eligibility | Help paying Medicare premiums is not necessarily full Medicaid. |
| Dental administrator | The medical and dental networks may differ. |
| Exact dentist location | Participation can vary by office and product. |
| Procedure and limits | A preventive benefit does not guarantee major dental coverage. |
Before a large dental expense
Ask for procedure codes, an itemized estimate and the insurer's response about benefits. Confirm authorization requirements, remaining annual maximums and whether a frequency rule affects replacement work. Do not assume that the word comprehensive means unlimited payment.
For a Medicare Advantage plan, compare the actual dental network and member cost sharing. For example, Priority Health identifies different Delta Dental networks for different Medicare products; a general Delta Dental listing is not enough to confirm participation.
If considering separate dental insurance, review premiums, waiting periods and exclusions before enrolling. Retain receipts and explanations of benefits. If a claim is denied, ask for the specific reason and review procedure rather than assuming that all Michigan dental coverage operates the same way.
