Medicare OTC and Spending-Card Benefits: How to Verify Your Allowance

Check whether your Medicare Advantage plan includes a spending benefit and understand eligibility, balances, expiration and purchase restrictions.

Explore this page

Some Medicare Advantage plans include an over-the-counter, or OTC, allowance or another spending-card benefit. These are plan-specific benefits, not an unrestricted payment automatically provided to everyone with Medicare. Check your exact plan, year and personal eligibility.

Separate the main questions

Question Evidence to use
Does my plan include the benefit? Current Evidence of Coverage or member handbook.
Do I meet additional eligibility criteria? The plan’s written requirements and confirmation.
How much can I use now? Your secure account’s available balance and benefit period.
What purchases qualify? Current plan tools and approved categories, not a general internet list.
What happens to unused funds? The specific benefit’s expiration and rollover rules.

A card is not proof of every benefit

One card can hold more than one balance. Rewards and covered allowances may have different rules. A plan may require a qualifying chronic condition and other criteria for some food or household-expense benefits. An OTC allowance alone does not prove access to those uses.

A Medicare Advantage benefit is also different from a Medicare Savings Program that can help qualifying people with Medicare costs. Do not confuse a retail spending card with government financial assistance or a medical savings account.

Use the benefit without exposing your information

  • Start with the website or telephone number on current member documents.
  • Activate the card as instructed and keep verification codes private.
  • Confirm that the merchant and intended purchase qualify.
  • Check the balance before checkout.
  • Keep receipts and contact member services about errors.

If an item is rejected, ask the plan about coverage and the retailer about the transaction. Do not change a clinical treatment because of a card-payment result.

Compare more than an allowance

Before choosing a plan, compare medical providers, covered services, annual costs and enrollment rules. A higher advertised allowance may not meet your overall needs. This guide contains no medication recommendations or product catalog; it explains how to verify benefits through the responsible plan.
