Tennessee residents receive Medicare under federal rules, while private plan availability, supplement policies and assistance resources require local checks. Medicare, TennCare and employer insurance are different coverages that may coordinate in specific circumstances.

Choose a coverage arrangement
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Original Medicare | Parts A and B pay covered services through participating providers under Medicare rules. |
| Medicare Advantage | A private plan provides Medicare benefits with its own network and cost sharing. |
| Medigap | A supplement helps with specified Original Medicare costs; it is not Medicare Advantage. |
| Medicaid or savings assistance | Separate eligibility and benefit rules apply. |
Check access across state lines
If you see doctors in a neighboring state, verify the specific coverage arrangement. Original Medicare access depends on Medicare participation and service coverage. Medicare Advantage routine care may depend on the network and authorization rules. A Tennessee address does not guarantee that every nearby out-of-state provider accepts a plan.
Enrollment dates are personal
Signing up for Parts A and B is separate from selecting a private Medicare plan. People who continue working should ask how their active-employment group coverage coordinates before delaying Part B. COBRA and retiree insurance generally do not create the same Part B enrollment protections as qualifying current-employment coverage.
If you also have TennCare, confirm your benefit category and whether an offered dual-eligible plan accepts that category. Do not assume a general advertisement establishes eligibility or pays every balance.

Prepare a comparison file
- Current insurance cards and effective dates.
- Doctors, hospitals and expected travel.
- Plan premium and likely service costs.
- Enrollment deadline and any employer documentation.
Keep written confirmation of a change before ending existing coverage, especially when employer or retiree benefits are involved.
