Medicare can cover qualifying medically necessary bunion surgery. Lapiplasty is a branded system used in certain bunion-correction procedures; its name does not guarantee payment or establish that the procedure is appropriate for you.

Separate surgery from routine foot care
Original Medicare generally excludes routine foot care. Treatment of a documented medical foot problem is a different question. The surgeon should explain the diagnosis, functional symptoms, procedure and applicable coverage requirements.
| Before scheduling | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Proposed operation | Exact procedure and whether additional work is planned. |
| Medical records | Symptoms, examination and relevant prior care. |
| Surgeon and location | Medicare participation and any plan network requirements. |
| Implanted hardware | How it is billed within the procedure or facility charge. |
Do not rely on the manufacturer's coverage statement alone
A statement that insurance typically covers a procedure is conditional. Ask your provider and plan to verify your specific situation. Clinical technique, insurance approval and expected recovery are separate questions.
Review the whole estimate
- Surgeon, facility and anesthesia charges.
- Imaging or other necessary preoperative services.
- Which follow-up visits are included.
- Any separately billed equipment or rehabilitation.
- Your deductible, coinsurance or plan copayment.
A shoe, brace or other item supplied afterward must meet its own benefit rules. Do not assume every recovery-related purchase is covered because the operation qualifies.
If you have Medicare Advantage
Confirm the actual surgeon and facility, required authorization and expected cost sharing. Keep a written response before planned care. A different insurer's approval does not determine your plan's decision.
This guide does not recommend Lapiplasty or compare surgical methods. Your qualified foot-care specialist should assess treatment options, while Medicare or your insurer determines coverage.
