Medicare, Braces and Invisalign: Check Orthodontic Coverage

Original Medicare generally excludes routine orthodontics. Ask about exact dental benefits, age limits and total costs before starting braces or aligners.

Original Medicare generally does not pay for braces or clear aligners used to straighten teeth. Invisalign is a product name, not a Medicare coverage category. A dentist's recommendation does not automatically establish insurance payment.

Coverage What to verify
Original Medicare Routine orthodontics is generally excluded.
Medicare Advantage dental extra Whether orthodontics is actually included for adults.
Separate dental policy Age limits, waiting periods, approved treatment and lifetime maximum.
Discount program A reduced price is not an insurance claim payment.

Do not assume a broad dental allowance covers aligners

A plan may cover examinations or certain restorative services while excluding orthodontics. Its annual dental allowance does not necessarily apply to every procedure. Ask the insurer to review the proposed treatment codes and the specific provider.

Medicare's limited medically linked dental exceptions should not be advertised as general approval for tooth straightening. If the practice believes a particular service qualifies under an exception, ask it to document the applicable rule and coordinate with the medical team.

  • Initial assessment and imaging.
  • Braces or aligners and adjustment visits.
  • Additional sets, refinements or replacement items.
  • Retainers and follow-up.
  • Costs if treatment stops or you change coverage.

Confirm authorization and any written treatment estimate before paying a deposit. A payment plan offered by the office is financing, not evidence of coverage.

Choosing how to proceed

Your dental professional should explain the clinical options. For insurance questions, use the member-service contact on your card and keep the reference number. This guide does not recommend a brand, promise results or determine whether orthodontic treatment is appropriate for you.
