Some Aetna Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits beyond Original Medicare. The covered procedures, network and cost sharing depend on the exact plan. An Aetna medical card is not proof that every dental service is included.

Identify the type of coverage
| Coverage | Dental question |
|---|---|
| Medicare Advantage | What supplemental dental benefit is listed in this plan’s Evidence of Coverage? |
| Aetna Medigap policy | Standard benefits do not provide routine dental insurance; verify any separately offered product or service. |
| Separate Aetna dental insurance | Read that policy’s own schedule, exclusions and network. |
Original Medicare generally excludes routine dental services but has limited exceptions for dental care linked to certain covered medical treatment. Those exceptions are different from a plan’s routine dental allowance.
Find the correct dentist network
Aetna says most of its Medicare dental benefits use the Aetna Dental PPO network. Some plans permit out-of-network dentists with different costs. Confirm the network for your particular benefit rather than assuming the medical plan’s HMO or PPO label answers the dental question.
Ask the office to verify the exact plan and whether it accepts new patients. Check specialists separately. A directory listing is a starting point; confirm participation before planned care.
Check the treatment estimate line by line
- List proposed services and procedure codes.
- Distinguish preventive care from other dental work.
- Check whether fillings, extractions, dentures or other proposed services are included.
- Ask about annual benefit limits, frequency rules and authorization.
- Confirm coinsurance and any amount above the remaining benefit.
Do not assume coverage for implants, cosmetic changes or replacement appliances without a written benefit check. Aetna identifies teeth whitening as an excluded cosmetic service in its general Medicare dental information.
If a claim differs from the estimate
Compare the claim notice with the procedure actually billed. Ask about coding or network errors and follow the plan’s review instructions. Your dentist recommends treatment; the insurer determines payment under the contract. This guide does not recommend a procedure.
