Medicare can cover eligible organ-transplant services, but coverage depends on the organ, medical criteria and approved facility. Being on a waiting list or having an evaluation does not automatically approve every later service.

Understand the benefit categories
| Part of care | Coverage to review |
|---|---|
| Hospital transplant services and eligible organ-acquisition costs | Part A requirements and inpatient costs. |
| Physician services | Part B coverage and cost sharing. |
| Eligible laboratory testing | Its separate Medicare laboratory benefit. |
| Travel and nonmedical living expenses | Budget separately; transplant coverage does not establish payment. |
Verify the center and proposed transplant
Medicare lists covered transplant services involving the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, intestine and liver, subject to applicable conditions. The organ transplant must be performed in a Medicare-approved facility. Ask the center to confirm approval for the relevant transplant program.
Corneal and blood-forming stem cell transplants have separate coverage requirements. Do not apply a general organ-transplant description to every procedure that uses the word transplant.
Arrange the financial review early
Ask the center’s financial coordinator for separate estimates for evaluation, hospital care, specialists and follow-up. Original Medicare generally has 20% coinsurance for covered Part B services after the deductible, while hospital care uses Part A rules. Covered certified laboratory tests generally have no patient charge.
Medicare’s transplant benefit does not pay transportation to the transplant facility. Ask a social worker about possible assistance and confirm eligibility rather than assuming a grant or other coverage will be available.
If you have Medicare Advantage
Verify the center and every treating provider in the exact network, along with authorization requirements. Before changing plans while awaiting or receiving care, review continuity, approvals and effective dates with the center and insurer.
