Medicare's annual Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. Changes made during this period generally take effect January 1 of the following year. For the fall 2026 period, that means coverage starting January 1, 2027.

Start with next year's documents
Use the Annual Notice of Change and the new Summary of Benefits. Do not assume last year's premium, copayment or provider directory still applies. Identify the exact plan and year on every document you compare.
Your review checklist
- Check your doctors, hospitals and usual locations against the new network.
- Compare premiums, medical deductibles, specialist costs and applicable spending limits.
- Read any referral or authorization rules that affect expected care.
- Check whether benefits you use have changed or require a different provider.
- Consider all your coverage needs, not just a promotional extra.
Keep the decision organized
Make a short list of must-have providers and affordable costs. Compare each option against that same list. Write down unresolved questions and get answers before applying. If you change, save the confirmation and verify the effective date and new member materials.
This is not every enrollment period
The fall period is different from signing up for Medicare for the first time, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment and Medigap Open Enrollment. A change in one type of coverage may not create a right to buy another. Confirm the rule that applies to your situation.
Reviewing options does not require you to enroll or switch. Avoid acting on an outdated advertisement or a deadline that has not been verified.
